How can social media land that next great job? Simple, it can’t. Only you can land a job. The best way to land a job is through personal connection, not through the internet. However, social media can help you build, expand, and manage those connections. However, you have to use these tools wisely to succeed.

Limited connections – Each social networking tools limits the number or types of connections you can make to present spammers. LinkedIn will only allow you to have 5 introductions and 10 bad requests to connect. Twitter will only let you have about 300 more friends than followers. Others have similar limitations. Before reaching out to people, it’s wise to establish a connection building strategy.

Identify targets – Your goal is of course to get a job. More specifically meet the people how can hire you. To do this, build a strategy for finding and connecting to those individuals or companies.

Build key connections – To make the most of your opportunities to connect, you will want to adhere closely to your strategy for reaching key targets.

Ask for introductions – Once you build connections with key individuals, ask them for specific introductions to your target audience.

Log off and dial – You can only get so close to people online. Social media can be a powerful component of your strategy to reach people. However, to truly build connections you have to log off of your computer and actually make a few phone calls.
