Sometimes a standard resume is not the best tool to get the attention of a potential employer. In many situations a resume is unwarranted or even inappropriate. However, there are a few unique tools designed to reach employers that can sometime work better than a traditional resume. To better equip you for these cases, you may want to prepare a Targeted Resume, Mini-Resume, Networking Resume, or even a Business Card Resume. In some even rarer cases you may want to have a Gimmick Resume ready.

Targeted Resumes are a perfect choice when you are qualified for multiple positions. In such cases, a candidate would create a resume tailor fit for each position. This will give you a chance to include keywords, buzz words, or experiences that are relate to the target job opportunity. Just make sure to use a filling system that will allow you to keep track of each format. Otherwise, you may submit the wrong targeted resume when applying for a position. You should also spend extra time double checking your contact info and employment dates.

Mini-Resumes are a good format if you have a short period of time to make a big impression. Usually these resumes are most appropriate in networking environments or semi-casual situations. These resumes are typically one page long and contain a focused “pitch” section and very brief work history. Oftentimes mini-resumes will be folded into a bi-fold or tri-fold for easy handling.

Networking Resumes are also short versions of your resume used in semi-social settings. A networking resume is typically printed on a heavy card stock paper the size of an index card. One side of the card would contain your “pitch”. The other side would contain a work history. Both sides should have your name and contact info across the top of the card.

Business Card Resumes are in this same vein. This format fits on a standard business card. Because of the size there is only so much that can be listed on the resume. That said, you must choose your words carefully. Most people will place their name, contact info, link to their resume, and a message about their target opportunity on one side of the card. On the back side include a brief statement about the reason you are a great fit for the position.

Depending on the situation these resume formats can help you catch the attention of the hiring manager. In this market, any advantage is a great thing. With a little bit of extra effort, you can be prepared for your next meeting, convention, or other social situation.
