Types of Resumes
When writing your resume, there are several resume formats or types of resumes that can be used. Each of the three major resume formats has their own unique advantages and disadvantages. It is important that you choose the format that best fits your experience. The three major types of resumes are Functional, Chronological, and Mixed.
A functional resume describes your skills and experiences instead of your work history. This narrative resume describes you and why you would be a good fit for the type of position you are targeting. This format is best for recent graduates, employees changing careers, or those with gaps in their employment history. However, there are a few shortcomings with this resume format. First, it is harder for the employer to read. Second, selling your skills with no demonstrable experience is a tough sell for anyone. Typically this resume format is best suited for entry level positions.
A chronological resume lists only your work history. It does not have a section dedicated to your skills or experience. This format of resume is very easy to read. It allows you to “brag” about the companies you have worked for and the titles you have held. However, it too has shortcomings. This format is most successful if all of your employers are large recognizable companies. Typically this resume is the best choice if you have several years experience with a fortune 500 companies serving in a similar role to the one you are applying for.
A combination resume showcases your skills, experience, and work history. This format gives you an opportunity to sell the employer on your capabilities and the value you bring. It then allows you to back up your sales pitch with a history of past assignments and successes. This format is easy to read and allows you to be flexible with your contents. The biggest shortcoming of this format is the length. This format has a big risk of running on.
Now that you understand each of these formats, you can choose the best one for your skills and experience. Once you choose a resume format, just make sure to leverage it to the best of your abilities. Regardless of the format, your resume is a chance to convince a potential employer that you’re the best candidate. Just don’t dwell on your resume format too long. You need to get started on your resume so you can begin approaching potential employers.
