Does Your Cover Letter Send a Mixed Message?
Any job seeker can find millions of articles written on resume tips and how tos. Most of this expert advice and information can help you, but information can fall a little short when it comes to cover letters. Cover letters can be seen as the very first impression from the hiring manager’s view. There is a mix of cover letter formats and most have one thing in common and that it the repetitive “Dear Hiring Manager”. “Dear Hiring Manager” is formal and a safe way to start your cover letter. If you are able to get the contact information of the hiring manager try including their name.
Do you use one and only one cover letter? If you do, you might be giving the wrong impression to the hiring manager. Think of your cover letter as a way to introduce yourself! Make your cover letter personable yet professional.
In your cover letter, you should include the company’s name. This shows the company that you’re not applying to every job under the sun. It shows that you are interested in their company and not just obtaining “any” job. Job seeking might have become a very mundane task to you, but you don’t want to show that to the hiring manager.
Some job seekers have made their cover letter more personable by including why they feel they would be a great fit for the job. Some job seeker will highlight key strengths the company is looking for in their cover letter. This can show the hiring manager that you have actually read the job requirements and you believe that you would be a good fit. When job seekers actually show a genuine interest in their job openings, hiring managers are more willing to push for the applicant to receive the job.
Some hiring managers will not look twice at a resume if it looks too standard. If a job seeker is not willing to put the time and effort into their cover letter it can make the hiring manager wonder if the job seeker is just going through the motions. If the hiring manager feels that you will only put minimum amount of time and effort in obtaining your next job it leaves them to wonder how your day to day work performance will be.
Adding a few personal touches to your cover letter might not guarantee you land your next job, but it will give you a reason to stay in the pile of candidates for the job.
