A thank you letter after a job interview is a must among potential candidates. Thank you letters are a great way to show the employer that you are interested in the job that you interviewed for. It will also show that you have great people skills and that you have respect for others’ time. When was the last time you sent out a thank you letter after a job interview?

Most people wonder when you should send out a thank you letter after the interview. Sending a thank you letter out within 24 hours of the interview is a good rule of thumb.

You should send out your thank you letter quickly for a few reasons:

  • Your memory will be fresh with all relevant information, such as, names of the interviewer and what was discussed during the interview
  • Your thank you letter will get there quicker. If it gets there before the decision is made, it gives you one last chance to influence their decision
  • It shows that you take action promptly when necessary

Thank you letters are another great way to get your name back in front of the hiring manager! Candidates are always looking for ways to stand out. Often time’s a candidate will disregard sending a thank you letter. Why miss out on a great opportunity? Take advantage of sending a thank you letter to your recent interviewers and show your interest.

A few things you should remember:

  • You should send an individual thank you letter to all professionals that you interviewed with
  • Thank them for their time and consideration
  • Express your interest in the company
  • Point out anything that you feel was unanswered or misunderstood
  • It is best to send a thank you letter on resume paper or use a nice thank you note on card stock. Remember you are trying to stand out from other candidates

Many candidates wonder if they should send an email or if they should send the thank you letter through regular mail. The answer is simple. You get to decide, it really doesn’t matter which method you choose as long as you are sending a thank you letter. However, a paper version is typically the most professional.

Should I hand write my thank you letter or type it? Well if you have great penmanship go ahead and handwrite it, if that’s what you prefer. However, if your handwriting looks like a doctor’s or kindergarten’s handwriting then you should type your thank you letter.

Make sure you proof read your thank you letter. The last thing you want to do in your thank you letter is confuse the reader. You might need to write and rewrite your thank you letter a couple of times. Spending extra time on your thank you letter will pay off in the long run!

This just shows that you are on top of things, you are professional, and that you really appreciate their time and of course, that you WANT the job!
