Using Gimmicks to Find a Job?
If you have heard of a wonderful new wacky way to get a job and you think it is fresh, you might want to think again. While some executives and hiring managers love to receive job seeking gimmicks, others are quite annoyed. Let’s run through a few job seeking gimmicks if nothing, but to have a well deserved laugh for the exhausted job seeker!
This one has been used a few times over, but some people send a shoe in with their resume. The shoe was sent to draw attention to the resume and to get the candidates foot in the door! Ha! I never heard if he landed the job, but he definitely earned an A for effort. Well we can only hope the shoe wasn’t expensive…
You have to get a laugh out of the energized job seeker who sends a bowling pin with the message attached “I’ll bowl you over“. This actually could work if the hiring manager is in a bowling team that needs an extra team mate. You never know! In the case of this job seeker, the idea wasn’t a strike, but it did lead to an interview.
Want to show marketing executives that you can consistently deliver creative impact? Well one eager job seeker expressed this by sending in an egg carton filled with faux eggs. The note attached stated “fresh ideas delivered daily“. This kooky gimmick hatched a whole carton of good fortune, when it lead to a job on the marketing team. It seems marketing people are open to creative new gimmicks even from candidates.
What about the women that stood on the corner of a busy intersection for hours holding a sign that stated she was looking for a job? She had plenty of resumes on hand and was ready to interview. She had plenty of moral support from people wishing her good luck and well wishers honking their horns. After a few hours a man drove by and went to his office and instructed his assistant to get her resume he interviewed her that same day and hired her the next day! What a way to land a job! Desire, courage, and persistence are some of best values to demonstrate to a potential employer. In this case, they were rolled up into a gimmick and lead to a quick turnaround for the brave candidate.
These clever ideas may prove to provide success stories for some while other job seekers felt the door slam in their face. Gimmicks might be the way to go for some but not for others. The moral to these stories, is to look outside the box for ways to land your next job. The market is still tough, but your creative and perseverance will pay off.
However, this mortal comes with a warning. Keep true to your personality when job hunting. The last thing you want to do is get a job on a gimmick that clashes with your characteristics. The hiring manager may hire you because of a gimmick. If you are not able to keep up the creativity once you’re hired, the win may be very short lived.
