Unemployment is the Mother of all Career Re-Invention
Just as necessity is the mother of all invention, Unemployment is the mother of all career re-invention. Of all the negatives of the current market, there has never been a better market for re-invention. The internet, green movements, alternative energies, and a number of other new jobs have emerged that didn’t exist just a decade ago.
One of the biggest reasons for unemployment is the old corporate mentality of putting bodies in a building. Many executive used to think that if they had a huge number of employees they were doing well. However, when the market collapsed so did their fiefdoms. They realized that for 10 years they had over hired and didn’t really need so many employees.
Many of those jobs simply will not comeback because they weren’t necessary. This may not be the case with your job, but whether it does or not this may serve as a great time to re-invent your career. To help you with a possible re-invention, we’ve put together a list of a few jobs that may be good transitions for you.
Blogging for Dollars: Newspapers are dying. Many of them have turned to the government begging to become propaganda arms just so they can stay in business. They are dying because people have turned to Bloggers. Blogging is an excellent way to convey news in an industry or special interest and attract readers and advertisers in the process. The advertising isn’t enough to keep the Post alive, but it sure makes a nice income for one person or a small group of writer.
Green Development Jobs: Mega builders and construction companies are struggling just to stay afloat. However, small green development companies are on the rise and thriving. Natural, cost effective green development is popular because of the lower price and environmental demand. If you have a hand for construction, a few books on using natural materials and settings could give you the edge you need to become a Green Developer.
Pickers & Purchasing Jobs: In a slow economy people get comfortable with buying used stuff to save money. This Christmas saw one of the biggest rises in sales on eBay and in consignment shops. Across the country people are making stable consistent income just from buying “junk” and selling it on eBay or to consignments.
Re-design your New Salary: No one has money for a new furniture set, but people still have a desire to spruce up their house. Re-designers use existing furniture, decorations, and items from consignment shops to re-design a room at a fraction of the cost of a new furniture set.
If you are unemployed by all means keep looking for a job, but with a little re-invention, you may be able to generate enough self employment income to keep you happily afloat until the market returns. If you’re lucky you may create a job you love enough to stop looking for your old job.
