How I Survived My Job Search
The biggest question on most people’s minds after losing a job is about financing. How will I survive until that next paycheck comes in? What will we do to pay the bills? How will I buy groceries? There are plenty of questions to ask yourself. Most people answer this with a part-time or even full-time job that serves as an interim way to stay afloat. However, there are many options out there.
Stay alive while hunting for a job:
Temp work – Temporary work can allow you to stay active, while still preserving time to pursue the job you really want. It may not pay as much as a full time job doing what you used to do, but it can help keep the bills paid and mouths feed. If you ask for half day or half week assignments you will have plenty of time to submit applications and interview with potential employers.
Evening work – Evening work does the same thing as temp assignments. It lets you reach out to employers during the day and still make some money in the evening. Waiting tables, telemarketing, and others are great examples of evening work.
Weekend jobs – If you work really hard on the weekends, you can pull as many as 24 hours without giving up a single hour of your job hunt time during office hours.
Freelance – Find a one-time project in your field that keeps your skill sharp, but lets you stay available to potential employers. Small businesses are often in need of this type of help.
Home based businesses – Data processing, lawn care, even dog walking are excellent ways to make money while searching for a job. Best of all, you are your own boss so you can work anytime you want and often times make as money as you want. The only thing to avoid is spending too much time growing your business and not enough looking for a job.
