Resume Basics
In the age of internet marketing and a flooded job market, it has never been more important to perfect the basics of your job search. The first and most basic step is to ensure your resume is clean, focused and contains the basics that you can not afford to leave out.
Contact Information: Ensure your contact information is correct, accurate, and highly visible. Your contact info should at minimum contain your current phone number and email. In most cases, it is wise to also include your current address, website, and professional social networking profiles.
Brief Career Summary: To respect the time of the potential employer, provide a very brief career summary very early in the resume. This 1 – 4 sentence paragraph should contain the basics of an elevator pitch you would use to sell your value as an employee.
Career History & Accomplishments: This section could vary dramatically from one resume format to another. However, it should always contain an accounting of your career history and your accomplishments in any of your past jobs.
Education Summary: Education can be a deciding factor for some employers. Always be sure to list your degrees and colleges or universities you have attended.
It’s just business: Your resume is just business. It should contain any pictures, personal info, family info, physical info, etc… By all means NEVER include your social security number, bank accounts, credit card numbers, or anything else that could make you an open target for identify theft.
These four components are the basics of any good resume. Before sending out a resume, make sure you have covered each of these in detail with no mistakes or typos. One this basic foundation, you will be able to build an entire marketing & distribution plan for your resume.
