Work hard, play hard is a motto to live by during a job search. Finding a job always takes a lot of hard work. However, any hard work requires play time and relaxation time to balance the stress of the work day. Not respecting your need for relaxation can quickly derail your job search efforts.

In the work place, there is often time allocated to address issues that are not related to work. These same times are vital in your new work place. The job of searching for a job might be a relatively solitary job, but it still a job and requires the same respect and similar tactics.

Team Meetings: Schedule time to meet with members of your job search team. This includes your friends, family, and support group. Find time to get out and have fun with them and other times to meet with them to advance your job search.

Learning events: Most communities have some form of industry group that hold regular meetings. Find those groups and make time to get out and learn about how your industry is changing in your absence.

Chamber of Commerce Meetings: Most towns have a Chamber of Commerce. These groups have free meetings, snacks, and receptions each month. Make time to get out meet people and talk about the towns business needs. You’ll get a break and may just find a new job or contract at the meeting.

Set a happy hour: Not a time to drink or frequent bars, but a time to stop working and be happy. This time will keep your body, mind, and family in balance. The following are ways to set happy hour times and get away from the monotony of the job search.

With a little thought I’m sure you too will find productive ways to break the monotony and respect your own happy hour.
