Get a Part Time Job to Build Your Career Potential
Having spoken on a number of college campuses, I’ve seen firsthand that today’s college grads are unprepared for the competitive work force they are about to enter. The pursuit of your degree has taught you how to study, how to pass tests, and may have even taught you the most basic theories behind the job you may someday perform.
Unfortunately, it did not give you real experience and likely missed most of what you should know to effectively perform the most basic entry level tasks in your chosen career field. Worst of all, the college campus gives graduates a sense of entitlement and arrogance. A sense that the perfect job will land in your lap because of the piece of paper they give you at the end of your college courses. All of these points will likely prevent you from getting the job you desire. However, rather than getting angry about the skills you don’t have, put what they did teach you to work and it can give you the true career potential you need to compete.
Any part time job can teach you the skills not often learned on university campuses. Many of them lead to successful transitions in to the career of your dreams. Let’s look at a few of the skills learned at a few part time jobs and how they match your career choice:
Finance/Accounting Careers: Try taking a job in sales. Sell anything from clothes to computers. The sales cycle allows you to handle money, interact with customers, and build your communication skills. All of these are vital to either career and can be referenced in an interview to demonstrate you would be good at managing a company’s money.
Advertising Careers: Try cutting lawns. Cutting lawns part time, you can experiment with your advertising. See what principals taught in the class room will actually attract the largest number of consumers. Since there is a financial reward to your advertising you can see clearly which ads worked and which didn’t.
Network Administration Careers: Try radio shack or an electronics department. Your degree will help you get the sales job. The sales job will give you access to all of the new computers and gadgets in the store to stay up to speed on technology. Plus you will be able to speak about this technology when interviewing for the network administration job.
Remember to use this job as a supplement to what the schools couldn’t teach the students. Soak up every experience like a sponge and figure out how they make you more attractive to you next potential boss.
