Learn From Past Recessions
The great depression was one of the darkest and most desperate times in American history. Families had lost their entire life savings to greedy bankers and Wall Street blunders. People everywhere were out of work. Unemployment was on the rise. There was little hope for short term recovery. For many people, this doesn’t sound that different from today. Since there are some similarities, we can learn from the great depression and other past depressions.
The working people of the great depression were defined by the jobs they did and the people they worked for. To many, the thought of losing a job was devastating and life altering. This was apparent in the high number of suicides and alcohol related deaths during the Great Depression. However, in today’s society, we have learned that there are many more important things in life than our employers. Holding on to this simple truth that you are not your job can lessen the impact of a job loss or life in our current recession.
Families shared the same view of a parents value, especially that of the father. Most children were embarrassed to admit that their father’s were out of work. However in today’s society, the family typically understands that sometimes, stuff happens. More surprisingly, some families have grown closer because of the current unemployment situation. The difference is the attitude of the unemployed parent. This change is seen all over television and the internet in the form of fathers reconnecting with their wife and children because of unemployment. This is a positive paradigm shift from the depressed breadwinner hiding from the family because of a job loss. This change alone will help families make the necessary changes to cope with and survive our current depression.
Most importantly, we can see from past depressions that current unemployment is a temporary situation. It is a stain on our work history, but nothing more. Life goes on even in the worst of depressions. We have learned that markets recover. We have also learned about the signs of a recovering market. Fortunately, the market is already showing signs of recovery. In some pockets of the country, there are even entire work forces that will be called back in time for the Christmas shopping season.
If we learned nothing else from the Great depression, it is the power of perseverance. If you keep posting resumes, applying for jobs, and working your network, employment will come before you know it.
