Closing Time: End the Interview Gracefully
Closing time in an interview is much like being chased out of a bar on your first date at closing time. You’ve only got a few minutes left to close. If you’re too pushy the date will end poorly. If you don’t ask for the close the other person will think you’re not interested. Prepare for closing time throughout the interview and you should be able to end well and leave the interviewer with a strong closing statement.
Don’t rush to the finish: The interviewer will tell you when time is running short. They set the meeting time and will also let you know when they’re running out of time. If you rush to the close, you run the risk of cutting the interviewer off before they ask a very important question. It could also make it look like you don’t want to be there or have something better to do.
Share your interest: Reassure the interviewer that you are interested in the job. If you don’t tell them, they won’t know. Adding this to your closer will tell them that even after this process, you are still very interested in the job.
Review relevant strengths: In your close be sure to reiterate a few strengths that make you a perfect fit for the job. Keep this list short and to the point, but don’t leave it off.
Overcome any issues: If the interviewer discovered any issues or expressed concerns during the interview, quickly explain why those will not be a problem.
Gain some peace of mind: There’s nothing worse than waiting for the phone to ring for weeks after a good interview. If you ask the interviewer what the next step will be or when you will hear about the next step, you can at least gauge how long you will be waiting to hear back from them.
Gratitude goes along way: The interviewer has chosen to pause their busy schedule just to learn more about you. This interviewer wasn’t owed to you, nor is the job. Make sure to express you gratitude. Thank the interviewer directly for taking time to interview and for considering you for such a great opportunity.
