In past articles, we’ve discussed the basic structure of a cover letter. In this article, we’ll walk you through turning your basic cover letter into an impressive cover letter.

Your resume outlines your career, skills, and experience. It is the most common means of advertising to potential employers. Unfortunately, few hiring managers enjoy reading resumes.  Your cover letter is a short concise means of selling the hiring manager on reading your resume. They don’t have to commit much time to read over the cover letter, so they are highly likely to read it. Unfortunately this short document doesn’t give you much time to sell them on reading the rest of your resume. To get past the cover letter, you have to make it very impressive.

Employer’s name: The two things people like to read the most are thank you and their own name. Including the hiring manager’s name will increase your chances of having your resume read more than most any other change you can make. If you don’t have it, find their name. First look at the listing closely as it may be buried. If not, try calling the company that you are targeting. Ask the receptionist who is responsible for filling the position, most of the time they’ll tell you if they know. Just remember to be very nice and get the proper spelling of the name.

What you say matters: Choose every word in your cover letter carefully. Make sure your pitch is highly focused and maximizes the value you bring. The more valuable you appear in the cover letter, the more likely the reader will be to move on to your resume. Personalize your qualifications: Every hiring manager wants to read a cover letter and think “This person is a perfect match.” The closer your cover letter is to the job listing the more likely the reader is to move on to reading the resume.
