Highly Effective Resumes
Most people have never been involved in hiring an employee, so it is understandable that many have no idea what the hiring process looks like from the employer’s perspective. Even for those of us who have hired a employees in the past, it can be hard to remember the key points of the process when preparing a resume. The following points will help you optimize your resume to be the most effective resume possible.
Employer’s time: Most hiring managers will spend less than 3 minutes per resume. Many of them won’t even dedicate a full minute to your resume. This means that you have to sell them fast. Your first 1/4 page should contain your biggest selling points.
Page 2 doesn’t affect round 1: Round 1 resume reviews seldom make it to the second page. If you haven’t sold them by the end of the first page, your resume will likely be trashed. Page 2 can get you further in later rounds, but will have little to no impact on the hiring managers first review.
Always lead with strengths: The stronger points and accomplishments should be listed sooner in your resume. This prioritization can make it easier to follow the first tips above.
Limit your resume: Your resume should only include experiences that are relevant to the position you are applying for. Strip out any jobs over 15 years old or anything over 10 years old that doesn’t pertain to the job you’re applying for.
These four little tasks will keep your resume focused and efficient which will make them more effective and more appealing to the hiring manager.
