The growing number of unemployment rates and the ever downsizing companies create anxiety for the employed. We can’t seem to get away from the news and the consistent discussions on the recession. This can bring fear to anyone who is employed right now. However, if you’re worried that you will be cut next, there are a few things that you can do to help secure your job!

First and foremost, stop worrying about being the next person who is laid off! If you are consistently stressed out, it is eventually going to affect your performance at work. Try to leave the worrying at your office door. Otherwise your worry may become a self fulfilling prophecy.

How is your relationship with your boss?
Maintaining a good relationship with your boss can help keep your job safe. This doesn’t mean you should become a brown nose employee, because they can get annoying. However, you should consider maintaining a good relationship with your boss. You can accomplish this by completing your work by your deadlines. You offer your time to help your boss with his/her work.

Are you known as the office whiner?
If you are consistently complaining about the slow fax machine or the bad coffee you will want to stop your bad habits and revaluate your attitude! Start looking on the bright side. What does your employer do or offer to the employees as perks? Do they buy you lunch once a week? If so state that you feel appreciated because they offer that. Show that you notice the good things at work…

Do you know your boss’ boss or the other managers?
Well if you don’t, you should! Making yourself known around the office, could spare your job during layoffs. If you are nothing more than a name in your department with no connections or ties, than you might be the first to go. If you have the chance to speak with other management in your office take advantage of it. Make small talk with people around the office. Make yourself known not only in your department, but in others as well! If you can, mention something subtle good your boss or the team has done recently. Promoting yourself, your team, and your boss will help secure all of your jobs.

Do you use all of your personal and vacation days and still call in sick?
Employers want to see that there employees want their job. They also want to see that they love their job. Constantly requesting time off does not show that you want or love your job. It shows just the opposite! Everyone needs a vacation and of course everyone gets sick from time to time, but use your time off wisely. If your company going through a round of layoffs and you have a vacation scheduled you might want to reschedule it for a different time and focus on delivering a few key wins for your team.

How much do you really contribute at work?
Are you an employee that gives just enough? During times of a recession you want to be known as the employee who gives 110% everyday! While your co-workers are getting laid off there is going to be a need for other employees to pick up the slack. It may seem unfair, but at least you will make it through the layoffs. If you can pick up some slack at work take advantage of it. Show your employer that you are willing to do what it takes!
