No company is complete without a strong team. The same is true for your job search. It is a job and requires a strong supporting team. It may even require the strongest team you have ever worked with. Fortunately you are the boss so you’re in charge of choosing most of the team members.

Choose carefully as you will need to build a team with the skills and strengths necessary to find your next job. Just like in business motivation workshops, I will be using sport analogies to demonstrate the needed aspects of your business team.

The Home Team: The home team, your friends and family, are most important. Your friends and family serve as your front line defense, blocking the effects of depression and loneliness. Keep this team up to date and involve them throughout the process, most especially when building your job search team.

The Quarterback: You are at the center of the team you are responsible for the execution of every play. You need to call audible when necessary. Ultimately, win or lose you lead the charge and live with the good and bad calls. All good quarterbacks acknowledge this before taking the field.

The Coach: A team without a coach is always lost. A good career counselor is the type of coach every team needs. You can find a career counselor in a number of places; an industry insider, an old boss, there are even counselors on staff at the unemployment office.

Running Backs: Recruiters and head hunters in your industry are some of the best running backs. Build friendships with them and speak with them regularly so you can hand the ball off at times for extra yards.

Receivers: Career placement agencies are not as dependable as other methods, but they can occasionally pull off a legendary Hail Mary. This risky plan can cost dearly, so you should only attempt it after talking in detail with your coach. However, you should find one you can trust just in case a long bomb becomes relevant.

Enough with the team analogy… Just like the business world or on a football field, you need a strong well rounded team to be able to make your goals a reality. In your new job this whole team comes together at times to help you complete the ultimate goal of finding a new job.
