Interviewing – Get Ready for the Big Interview
Congratulations, your hard work has paid off. You have been chosen by a company to go to the next round. Now it’s time to get ready for the big interview. If it’s been a while since you’ve interviewed for a job, this handy check list will help you be successful in your next interview.
To prepare for your interview, it is always good to start with a basic supply kit. As soon as possible, print off a few copies of your resume. If you have prepared any unique resumes or a business card resume, make sure you have a few of those on hand as well. Dig out your best briefcase and load it up with your resumes and a note pad and pen. Check over you interview suit, make sure it is stain free and pressed.
Just as important as the supply kit, is a good set of directions. There is no surer way to increase your stress level, then getting lost on the way to an interview. Make sure to print off directions as soon as you can. If the employer is in an area you’re not familiar with, you may even want to drive by a day or two ahead of time, just to be safe.
Once you have your kit and directions ready, it’s time to start researching. Knowing about the company is a huge help in any interview. If you are ready to discuss a few points about the company, it will show how interested you are in the job. It also shows that you do your homework and will likely come to work prepared and ready to hit the ground running.
If you still have time left, you may want to research the people you will be interviewing with. Nowadays, most people have a linkedIn, Facebook, or MySpace account. Either one of these will tell you a lot about the interviewer. This knowledge is very useful, especially if you are uncomfortable meeting new people. The more you know about the person, the less likely you are to be nervous. Plus, you may find a few points you have in common. This will give you more ways to relate to the interviewer.
Last but not least, remember that interviewing is very stressful for almost everyone. This includes the person or people who will be interviewing you. Have a story, joke, or conversation topic to discuss aside from the job. This will help break the tension and make you look like a cool calm professional.
