Losing a job is ranked as one of the top 10 most devastating experiences a person can go through, but there is an upside. Everyday millions of Americans go to a job they can’t stand. Some people are burnt out on the never ending office politics. Others feel under appreciated by their boss or underpaid for their work. Some just plain out hate what they do for a living. If you have been laid off, you do not have to live with any of these things for the time being.

While you are on the bench waiting for that next great job, you have a few opportunities that you simply don’t have while you’re working. Of course, you have time to stop and smell the roses. Maybe you can use this time to catch up on neglected projects around the house. You might even decide to start a new business doing what you did before, but for yourself instead of a company. Above all else, you now have a chance to stop and evaluate what is important to you.

Many successful people refer to a long forgotten recession as the turning point in their life, when they decided to do something different. Right now, the next Rockefeller, Kennedy, or Gates is sitting on the couch reflecting on his or her career, and planning the next step. The difference between these people and the average Joe is their ability to evaluate what they are good at and build a career of their own around something they love. Whether you are destined for billions or a minimum wage job, you can do the same during this downtime.

To make the most of this time, start by thinking about who you are. In your career to this point, what energized you? What did you do that you would love to do again? If all of your past jobs paid the same, which one would you choose? Which jobs let you be you? Which jobs did you hate doing? What job did you always want to do but couldn’t for one reason or another? Answering these questions will point out a few interesting career paths you may not have considered.

Next think about those skills you have picked up over time. What are you naturally good at? Where have you shined at the office? What things are you horrible at doing? Evaluate these skills honestly and you may see even more jobs you could do. At the same time, some of your dream jobs will be quickly disqualified.

Now that your time isn’t consumed by an exhausting job, you have a chance to stop and reflect. If you take this time, you may be able to provide for your family without resorting to taking a job you hate. Be creative, evaluate your skills and passions fairly, and you may just change your life for the better. Ten years from now, you will look back on this down time. You may see it as a horrible experience. However, if you use this time wisely, this may be the time that changed your life for the better.
