Job Search Action Plan
Working without a plan will get you nowhere. Build a plan and stay organized will help you stay productive while running your new business of finding a job. To help you stay focused we’ve outlined a few components of an organized balanced job search.
Tracking System: Develop a system for keeping track of the companies you’ve contacted or want to contact. Record who you spoke with and when. Record when a resume is sent. Record any response. Record your follow up efforts. Use this information to manage the number of contacts made and to tweak your approach to reaching the right people.
Make a plan: Plan out how you will contact potential employers. Prioritize them to make sure you are calling those employers that you want to work for.
Work the plan: Don’t just plan, act on it. Work the plan daily in small doses.
Take action: When contacting a potential employer be sure to set a follow up date & time. If they ask you to call them back, make sure you set the date, even if they don’t have an opening. Don’t forget to follow up on time. This is the highest priority action each day.
Follow up: After speaking with anyone about a potential job, follow up. If you engage via email or phone sent a quick follow up email. If its in-person, send a hand written note. Either way, follow up.
This plan is just a skeleton. You may need to tweak it to fit your style and preferences. However, much like a good business needs a good business plan, your job search needs a good job search plan.
