Stewardship as an Avenue to a New Job

Summer is just around the corner. Summertime and the holiday season are the two times of the year when companies have more work than usual. However, since most companies are still suffering from budget limitations, they are not able to staff accordingly. This can prove to be an excellent opportunity for people who are passionate about finding a new job.

Even in today’s market, people who are out of work are less likely to be chosen for a job than someone who is currently employed. Plus if you are in a highly specialized market like financing, technology, etc… You can actually be losing vital skills just because you’re not employed.

These two facts make stewardship an excellent option. Stewardship is much like an internship for experienced professionals. In a stewardship program, you volunteer to work at a particular job for a set period of time for no pay. I know working for free doesn’t sound excited, but it adds a current job to your resume and helps keep your skills sharp. Plus at the end of the stewardship, the company is very likely to hire you, assuming you were a good fit and their budget allows.

One cool benefit of stewardships is that you have more choices when it comes to choosing and employer. In your local area, there are likely to be a number of startup companies in desperate need of experienced people to help run their company. If stewardship is a viable option for you, you’ll have your pick of the type of company and type of job you would want to do for that company.
If you take a stewardship with a startup, there may be even more benefits than with a big company. Your stewardship may lead to a regular salary, but in startups, you may also end up owning a portion of a growing company.

If you have the time and resources necessary to try your hand at stewardship, reach out to the same target companies that have turned you down as an employee. Skip the HR department and instead contact the manager of the division you are interested in. Simply tell them why you want to work for their company, what you want to learn, and most importantly, tell them that you are willing to work for free for X amount of time. You’ll be surprised how many people that couldn’t hire you before will jump on the chance to have you in as a steward.
